Honda/Acura engineers were recently caught testing a new sport crossover in the dead of night around the deserts of California, and while they came wielding flashlights to blind our spy photographer's lens, we got these pictures of what the luxury brand is up to in the quickly softening market for crossovers. The vehicle appears to be similar in shape to the BMW X6 despite the heavy camouflaging obscuring its profile. The windshield is very steeply raked and the shape of the cutout allowing the grille to breathe is reminiscent of Acura's new Superman-shaped grilles. Indeed, even the wheel and tire combination suggests that this is a crossover with sporting intentions. It may be a big brother to the RDX with more athletic moves than the MDX. Still, we can't help but wonder why Acura would be working on yet another crossover with those two already in its lineup, especially considering the market's current exodus to passenger cars. Nearly three weeks ago, Acura released a single image of its redesign 2009 TL sedan, along with some official specs. So far, the Honda subsidiary hasn’t released any further images or information. Luckily, a quick thinking photographer managed to snap a few photos of a virtually undisguised ‘09 TL at a store parking lot.
The redesigned 2009 Acura TL will arrive in showrooms this fall. The luxury sedan will be available in two distinctive versions including the first ever application of ‘Super Handling All-Wheel Drive’ (SH-AWD) on TL.
So far, details are sparse, and only a single image has been released. As previously reported, both the standard FWD and the SH-AWD model (distinguished by its quad exhaust) have been seen. When it comes to redesigns, Acura appears to be on a roll — we’ve already seen the new RL and TSX this year, and the new TL should arrive before the end of 2008, too.
In April, information leaked out of an Acura dealer meeting in New Orleans regarding the new TL. According to a source who attended the meeting, the 2009 Acura TL lineup will consist of two models: a base front-wheel drive car and an up-level all-wheel drive model. The front-driver will be powered by a 280 horsepower 3.5L V6 whereas the AWD model will receive its motivation from a 3.7L V6 producing 310 horsepower.
Despite boasting 310 horsepower and all-wheel drive, the range-topping model will not sport the Type-S nameplate. In fact, the source says that Acura will not offer a Type-S model, at least not in 2009. It remains unclear if the performance model will eventually join the lineup.
However, the SH-AWD model will sport quad-exhaust and 18 inch wheels to differentiate it from lesser TL models. Our spy photos also clearly show the car’s new SH-AWD rear differential.
Acura has promised us a new TL by the end of the year so a Los Angeles Auto Show reveal seems likely, with an on-sale date shortly after.
According to 7Tune, Honda is concerned about their environmental image with the new 5.5-liter V10 they plan on dropping between the rails of the new 2010 Acura NSX. We're now told Honda plans to employ "Variable Cylinder Management" to deactivate an entire bank of cylinders in the V10 in cruising situations to greatly improve fuel economy. That's all well and good, but what do the prospective power numbers look like on this new engine? And what of other rumors for the big V10?
The speculation on power is unconfirmed at this point, but sources are placing the figures at around 590 HP and 430 lb-ft of torque. Considering the original got up to about 290 HP and 240 lb-ft of twist, this represents one hell of an upgrade. Speaking of upgrades, the other rumor we're hearing points to the possibility of some form of special 2009 Acura RL fitted with the same NSX V10. Obviously such a car would bend our fragile little minds to the breaking point and cause droplets of sweat-like dew to form on every other performance sedan's hood. Although this'll certainly help potential RL buyers interested in performance, unless it comes to market with a less-toothy grille, it won't do much for those looking for something better to look at.
The 2009 Acura TL is coming this fall, and Acura has released the first official image of the car. Acura's love-it-or-hate-it new shield-grille face is affixed to the front end of the new sedan, which also sports thin, slanted headlamps and a pair of angular lower intakes. A pronounced accent line sweeps down from back to front, where it leads directly into a very pronounced wheel arch. Looks like we'll have to wait a little longer to see the car's posterior.
Two TL flavors will be offered, confirming the preview report that we ran back in April. Honda doesn't announce powertrain specifics other than to confirm that the new TL will be available with Acura's SH-AWD system and also offer the marque's "most powerful engine ever." We assume that to mean the 300-horsepower 3.7L engine used in the RL and MDX will also be making an appearance in the TL. Based on what we were told back in April, look for a 280-horsepower 3.5L to serve as the base engine in the FWD car.
